Netters end league matches; player advances to semifinals

After competing at the first rounds of league prelims Oct. 24 , singles player No. 1 Anna Minasyan advances to semifinal at San Gabriel High School.

During the second round, varsity netters Singles No. 2 Jessica Lew, Singles No. 3 Siona Flowers and Doubles No. 1 Kaylee Lay and Akina Nishi competed against other schools in the Almont League.

Doubles No. 2 Hazel Gomez and Zoe Torres and Doubles No. 3 Anna Lin and Katrina Lin played in first round of prelims. The team ended the season in fourth place with a league record of 3-5.

In their final league match against the San Gabriel Matadors Oct. 23, varsity lost, 11-7, and JV lost 15-3, respectively. Minasyan won two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Lew also won two sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

“The season went really well compared to last year, and it has made me really happy,” said Lew.

The netters triumphed against the Montebello Oilers Oct. 18 with a score of 12-6. The JV team lost in a tie, 9-9 (65-60). Minasyan swept all three sets with scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3. Lew won two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-0. Lay and Nishi scored 6-3 and 7-5. Gomez and Torres won two sets with scores of 6-4 and 6-0. A. Lin and K. Lin won two sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

“As a team, we have created a tight bond and have worked really hard together. I think that we have far exceeded our goal by defeating Alhambra and Montebello. We have pulled off many more wins than last year, and I am so happy to have done this with my team. I hope we can all enjoy our last week together,” said Lay.

In their away game against the Mark Keppel Aztecs Oct. 16, the varsity netters lost, 13-5, while JV lost 15-3, respectively. Gomez and  Torres won two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
