Students prepare for graduation

Valedictorian Hovhannes Minasyan and Salutatorian Calvin Tang will represent their graduating class at the commencement ceremony to be held June 13 at 6 p.m. in Weingart Stadium at East Los Angeles College (ELAC).

The announcement of the recipients was made at the Renaissance rally in Byers Gymnasium June 1.

In his speech, Minasyan will share his perspective and touch on the attributes which he feels led to his success. “With drive and community, you can succeed,” he said.

Salutatorian Calvin Tang will be giving his speech on the importance of being connected to family and friends. “My salutatorian speech will be about the idea of family, whether they are related by blood or not. I hope it will convey the message that no matter what, there will always be people who support you,” said Tang.

Sofia Carmona, president of United Student Body (USB), will welcome attendees to the graduation and give a the history of the class of 2018. “My graduation speech will make the graduates go down memory lane of their four years in high school, from the big events like homecoming to the smallest events at Schurr. I want to be able to convey a sense of pride in being part of this class, along with being a part of Schurr,” said Carmona.

Choir and band members will perform at the graduation ceremony. Band will play the traditional “Pomp and Circumstances” for the graduates to walk in. Choir members will sing the “Star Spangled Banner,” as well as the alma mater.

Graduates will arrive at the stadium at 4 p.m. and meet in front of the tunnel into the stadium on Floral Drive.

Guests may begin arriving at 4:45 p.m. through the stadium’s main entrances. No tickets are required to enter the stadium, and parking is available at no charge.

Spectators are asked not to bring items that may obstruct others’ views of the graduation ceremony and to keep the campus clean. Outside beverages and coolers are not allowed inside the stadium.

Diplomas will be available for seniors to pick up June 14 from 7:45 to 11:30 a.m. in front of Schurr’s administration building.
