“A Wrinkle in Time,” based on the classic 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle, hits theaters March 9, delighting readers.

The movie adaptation, which began with an October 2010 announcement, will feature a number of well-known actors. Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Chris Pine will take the leading roles. The production will be directed by Academy Award winner Ava Marie DuVernay, best known for her work on “Selma” (2014).  Others working on the film include screenplay writer Jennifer Lee and cinematographer Tobias A. Schliessler.

A teaser trailer for the live-action film debuted at the 2017 Official Disney Fan Club expo in July and trended at No.1 on YouTube for the first 48 hours of its release. The official trailer for the movie was later released by Disney Movie Trailers in November.

The film follows an adolescent girl named Meg Murry (Storm Reid) who leaves home to find her scientist father who has been missing since trying to discover a new planet. On her quest, she seeks help from her brother (Deric McCabe) and three astral travelers: Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon).  Together, they travel through a tesseract, represented as the fifth dimension, by “wrinkling time.”  They are forced to battle darkness in order to uncover the truth about Murry’s father.

According to cinemablend.com, the film will still contain the basic components of the novel, but with a modern approach.  DuVernay explained that “this is a movie that embraces a bit of a unique, darker edge” as she played with the setting and aesthetic.

The trailer promises an adventure-filled storyline as Meg travels to a world of fantasy and whimsy. It also gives viewers a glimpse of the intricate costumes, makeup and special effects featured throughout the film.

Tickets can be purchased and photos from the movie can be viewed at disney.com/wrinkleintime.  The film carries a PG rating and will have a run time of two hours.
