Signing their letters of intent to their respective schools, gridders Lance Babb, Michael Guerra and Michael Torres show Schurr athletes the academic success sports can bring with hard work and talent.

After being observed by scouters since his freshman year, Babb began receiving offers from many schools because of his success in football. Ultimately, he chose to commit to University of California, Davis on a fully paid scholarship to play as a wide receiver on the Division I team.

“It’s a blessing. All the support that I’ve received and the work I’ve put in has made it easier to accomplish this goal that I set when I was younger,” said Babb after signing his letter of intent Feb. 7.

As with any life-changing decision, Babb looked at the pros and cons before settling on UC Davis. His trip out to the campus was paid for by the school in order to familiarize him with the environment and team.

“When I took my first visit out to UC Davis, I was a little skeptical, but on my second visit, I loved the hospitality I was greeted with and the feeling of being at home. I chose UC Davis because I like the area, team and staff. They all formed a sense of connection as a community,” said Babb.

Both Guerra and Torres received partially paid athletic scholarships to the University of La Verne, where they will be playing football together on the Division III team.

“It feels good to be recruited to such a great university. My achievement is a reflection of my teammates, coaches and program. The Spartan attitude will definitely carry on to my time at La Verne,” said Guerra.

Although Torres has not received his scholarship details, he is still guaranteed a spot at the university of La Verne this upcoming fall.

“I feel greatly appreciative for this opportunity. All of the hard work I’ve put into this sport is paying off and it feels great, but I know I’ve got to work even harder now at the next level,” said Torres.  Lessons that I will take over to La Verne that I have learned from Schurr is to always be on time, work hard, and have a positive attitude.

 

Michael Torres:

1) I feel greatly appreciative for this opportunity. All of the hard work I’ve put into this sport is paying off and it feels great, but I know I’ve got to work even harder now at the next level.
2) My family and coaches were overjoyed after hearing the news because they know I’ve worked hard to reach this goal of mine.
3) Lessons that I will take over to La Verne that I have learned from Schurr is to always be on time, work hard, and have a positive attitude.

 

Michael Guerra:

“It feels good to be recruited to such a great university. My achievement is a reflection of my teammates, coaches, and program.”

“My family and coaches were proud of me and im thankful for there support from them and my teammates because without them I wouldn’t be here.”

“The lesson im going to carry with me to university is the spartan attitude. Molan labe.”

“I’m receiving around 30k in my scholarship.

“I know UC Davis is a good school for him and it is close to home so I think he is very happy with the opportunity that he has. I know that he will be a great addition to help the football team reach their goals.”

 

Coach Ramos:

“When he was a sophomore i knew that he had the ability to reach this level but sometimes it’s hard to tell with how schools offer scholarships. By junior year we knew he was going to be signing somewhere.”

 

“The fact that people can go on from here to a four year college is a great opportunity because i know that people who come from our community will serve as a great resource in the future that will come back and influence us.”

 

Scouting:

There are websites that send emails asking for qualifications of an athlete. Speed, weight, academics, etc. If they show improvement then college coaches will come and gather all the info necessary. Coaches personally try getting the athlete’s info out to the schools. Coaches should try to make their athletes known instead of waiting for the schools to come to you.
