Strolling down the street in Huntington Beach, a passerby stops in her tracks as she notices something out of the ordinary: it’s a small battalion of corgis in heading toward the beach.

Tomorrow’s event will be the fifth anniversary of the annual Corgi Beach Day. It was started in the fall of 2012.

According to surfcityusa.com, SoCal Corgi Nation gathers three times a year, during the spring, summer and fall.

The goal of this event is to bring the Corgi community together to celebrate and socialize with one another.

The Corgi breed is described as being playful, sociable and very athletic. Although they are on average only 10-12 inches tall, weigh no more than 30 pounds and have tiny legs compared to those other dogs, they are amazingly fast runners.

Event attendees will be able to take part in activities including the Corgi kissing booth, the Instagram Corgi celebrity meet-and-greets, as well as several competitions.

“I like to attend because I get to meet the Instagram-famous Corgis that I’ve always wanted to meet,” said Melissa Jew, senior. “Seeing all of these adorable Corgis with my own eyes, even if some are more timider than others, interacting with strangers really raised my spirits.”

Attendees will also view offered attractions such as the Healthy Flea Market, the Healthy Vendor Village, the Corgi photo kiosk and the Premium Corgi-centric Vendors.

“There’s even a booth where they raise money to help dogs who need surgery there,” said Jew.

Over the course of the last six years, event attendance has greatly increased. Many of those who take part do not even own a Corgi, but they attend because they are dog lovers.

“There are people like myself who don’t bring their dogs but just want to see other kinds of dogs,” said Jew. “And although I have only attended Corgi Beach Day once, I would like to go to this huge ‘paw’ty again.”

Corgi Beach Day is being held at 100 Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additional information is available surfcityusa.com or socalcorgination.com.
