Known for his glamorous and extravagant lifestyle, Juan Gabriel, a Hispanic songwriter and vocalist, reached the hearts of his many fans through his music.

Gabriel launched his career around the age of 17 when he landed in jail and was recommended to an artist by a prison guard. He then co-wrote his first song called “Maria la Bandida” or “Maria the Bandit” with Queta Jimenez.

“My favorite song from him was Yo No Naci Para Amar because it’s so original and unlike anyone elses’ that I have ever heard.” said Nicolle Camarena, junior.

After that, Gabriel continued his journey of success, that consisted of composing many hit songs such as “No Tengo Dinero” or “I Don’t Have Money” and “Abrazame” or “Hug Me,” as well as composing songs for other artists such as Mark Anthony, Selena and Placido Domingo.

Throughout the years, he became universally recognized, and by 1985 he had sold 20 million records, according to billboard.com. He was also the first Mexican artist that was not of a Classical genre, yet was able to perform at the “Palacio de Bellas Artes” or “ Palace of Fine Arts.”

“He was such a great singer and had a really outstanding voice, unlike any other, which is why his music resonates with me” said Sienna Perez, senior.

Gabriel passed away Aug. 28 from a heart attack during a U.S. tour while in Santa Monica.

Catching the attention of many through his unique singing and fashion style, and although he has passed, his music will still be cherished by his fans to come.
