Cagers ‘replay’ victories

Hoping to improve their preseason record of 3-6, the varsity cagers will continue their participation in the Westminster Tournament Dec. 18 at Westminster.

The varsity cagers played in the tournament last night, but scores were not available at press time. In the first game of the tournament Dec. 16, the team defeated Bellflower, with a final score of 59-51.

“I’m positive about this season because we have a lot of returners and the team continues to get better,” said Head Coach Mike Gavaldon.

The Spartans also participated in the El Rancho Tournament Dec. 7-12. The team fell short to Sunny Hills, 66-61, Dec. 12. They made a comeback in a game against the Montebello Oilers Dec. 11, winning 53-46, but they lost to Temple City, 70-64, Dec. 10. In the first game of the tournament Dec. 9, the cagers also defeated the Verbum Dei Eagles, 59-45.

“I think this season will be great,” said senior Stephan Trujillo,” we are much more experienced than last year.”

The Spartans played in the Esperanza Tournament Nov. 30- Dec. 5. They lost to Paramount 69-45, Dec. 5, Long Beach Jordan 61-48, Dec.2, and Esperanza 42-72. The cagers also lost to Los Alamitos 71-35, Nov. 31 in the first game of the tournament.

With a preseason record of 3-2, the JV cagers will look forward to play in the El Monte

Tournament tonight.The JV team played against the South Gate Rams yesterday, but scores were unavailable at press time.

The JV cagers played in the Ayala Tournament Dec. 7-12.The team defeated the Saints, Dec. 8, 55-32, but fell to Temple City Dec.11, 60-70.In their preseason game against Norwalk at home, the Spartans triumphed with a final score of 50-44, Dec 9.
