Spikers look forward to tourney

Hoping to improve, the varsity spikers will play in a tournament today at Whittier and will start league against the Matadors Oct. 1 at San Gabriel High School.

The varsity girls have a preseason record of 4-3 as of Sept. 23.

“I want the girls to finish every game strong before thinking about CIF,” said Varsity Coach George Ortiz. “I think the girls’ potential is there to grow, and they can do many great things in the future; they just have to work harder as a team.”

The spikers played against the Temple City Rams yesterday, but scored were unavailable at press time.

The team was defeated Sept. 22, by the Pioneer Titans, 3-2, with set scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 and 15-7.  However, the Spartans were victorious Sept. 17, against the Rosemead Panthers, 3-0, with scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-12.

“We definitely need to work on our team bonding,” said senior Julia Verdugo.” We all have our individual strengths, but we need to come together as one.”

The Spartans suffered a defeat against the San Marino Titans, 3-0, Sept. 10. They also lost to the California Condors on Sept. 8, 3-0, with set scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-23. The spikers beat El Rancho, 3-2, Sept. 3.

“We got a new coach this year who’s ready,” said varsity player Samantha Fierro. “He has ambitions, sees a lot for us and is fired up for us, so we’re fired up as well.”

The JV spikers have a preseason record of 2-5 as of Sept. 23.

The JV team played against the Titans Sept. 22 in an away game and was defeated, 2-1, with set scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-12.

The frosh-soph team also has a preseason record of 3-5 as of Sept. 23.

The frosh- soph spikers were defeated against the Bald Eagles, 2-0, with set scores 25-19 and 25-12. The team was victorious against the Titans, 2-0 Sept. 22, with set scores of 28-26 and 25-15. They beat the Panthers, 2-0, with scores of 25-13 and 25-7 on Sept. 17.
